Sprigger Bank Fishing 12/16

Good news the weather gods have shined on us and we are able to do are outing .

Herman and I have decided the best way to go is if we all caravan from Jacks bait and tackle shop which is on Dixie highway right before you get in the keys meet up time is at 6:30.

For you guys planning on buying bait there are tackle stores on the way down that you can go to Dons Bait and tackle 90 N Homestead Blvd , Homestead ,Fl 33030 .

You can always pick up your bait at Jacks Bait and tackle where we will be meeting. Bait of choice and the easiest to deal with is Live shrimp expect to buy a good amount at least 8 dozen if the Mackerel fishing is good you might be getting a hit every cast.

Strips of Ballyhoo work well also if you can catch lady fish or pin fish  behind the boat you can always strip them up and use them.

On the artificial side of baits Mackerel jigs work well tipped with shrimp also spoons work well.

It is a good time to use fly rod for the Mackerel a sinking line is suggested for this type of fishing and fly’s with a long shank hook work well, If you cannot find a fly with a long shank a wire trace to a fly will work also.

We will be launching out of SeaBird Marine 69501 Overseas Hwy,Long Key , Layton, Fl 33001 305-664-2871.

We will be following Herman out to the Mackerel grounds.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to call me 786-525-7034 or Herman 305-972-4209.

Please try to make the outing it is going to be a lot of fun.

Thanks Guys

The Future of fishing with SDA – Meet Tuesday, 10/24

Tomorrow night, Oct 24, we are having a meeting to discuss a plan for next year.

This club is a bunch of friends who regularly enjoy times and events together.  We meet twice a month, have a meal,  and an additional activity once a month.  The goal is to have fun together.

It has been a club since 1971.  It has always been a family oriented club with women members and family participation.  It has it’s own cool clubhouse too.

The current frustration is a regular meeting has only a few who attend.

There are 22 paid members.

There are 85 names on the email distribution list.

There are 230 members on Meetup.com

All seem to enjoy reading about us. It appears most have an interest but somehow do not come to meet.

The friends who do come have not had much fun trying to make everything happen.  The challenge is not much incentive to continue this way.

Tomorrow night we are meeting to plan for 2018.

New officers are needed, but the real need is for numbers of people to be excited and have fun.

Henry is bringing NY style Pizza, and there are cold adult carbonated beverages in the refrigerator.

So maybe this evening you can come?

Hope to see you there.

There is no more fun for a day of fishing!.  Grab your friend or child and let’s go!  Adults are just $70, juniors are only $30.  To enter Team competition is $25 more per registration and must fish from the same boat.  Registration is available at the Captains meeting.

Good luck fishing!!!

Flamingo Kayak and Boat fishing ‘Out Front’ 04/08/17

Saturday, April 8, calling all Yakers and members with boats are going to fish Flamingo Florida Bay side.

We will launch at 7:00 am from the ramp nearest to the store.

For me it takes 2 hours from the time I leave my house to when I’m on the water. Your mileage may vary.

I plan to fish from 7:00 am until noon and then have a well earned hamburger in the restaurant right there at Flamingo.

It appears the wind will be North about 15 mph during the morning, moving more NorthEast around 2:00 pm, when we will be out of there.

The tide at Flamingo will be high at 2:10 am and then low at 9:57 am. Next high tide will be at 2:48 pm. Therefore most of the morning will be falling tide. Snake Bight is 1-1.5 hours after Flamingo tide change.

Google Maps coordinates for the image are
25.140558, -80.923504

I will look for clear water if I can find it. I will probably start going East toward Christian Point. Joe Kemp Key is a good target location for fishing. There are tons of flats to the East of the boat channel.

The West side has some deep water in front of the Camp Ground. Additionally, the flat is beautiful. Further West is Bradley Key. That is also a good target location for fishing.

As you know, that is why they call it ‘fishing’.

Next Tuesday, April 11, we will get together for gourmet Pizza that Eddie will bring. That way we can eat and talk about fishing.

There is also a special guest speaker Ana Zangroniz, Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent, University of Florida IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County. I will send another notification on the weekend with more information.

P.S. the board meeting will be at Blue Martini this evening starting at 7:30 pm. All are welcome.

Meet Feb 7 for Feb 18 fishing outing

Tuesday night, February 7th will be the first meeting of February. We will plan the monthly outing for Saturday, February 18th at Lake Trafford.

The dates are delicately chosen to prevent a fishing conflict with Valentines day. We will cover the logistics of how to get to the lake and what fishing is there.

Bring your boat, jon boat, kayak, paddle board, feet, or other form of fishing. We will have a BBQ with hamburgers, etc at 1:00 pm after fishing. I will bring the Smokey Joe, and some burgers. You bring some sides, deserts, etc and we will have a picnic after the fishing.

Lake Trafford is the largest freshwater lake south of Lake Okeechobee with an area of 1,600 acres. Located near the town of Immokalee, the lake serves as the headwaters of the Corkscrew Swamp-Imperial River, Cocohatchee River, and Camp Keais Strand-Panther Refuge. Lake Trafford has historically been an important boating, fishing, and recreational resource.

Between 2006 and 2010 the South Florida Water Management District operated with the Lake Trafford Restoration Project at a cost in excess of $21 million dollars. The goal of lake restoration was to restore native plant and fish communities and improve overall lake health.

Fish species present in the lake include largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, and large brown bullheads. Access to Lake Trafford is mainly by boat. There is a small county park located on the lake that provides some bank access along with a nice public fishing pier. Lake Trafford Marina and the park both have public boat ramps. Services available from the marina include boat rentals, guide service, airboat tours, and bait and tackle.

TrophyCatch is FWC’s citizen-science program that rewards anglers for documenting and releasing trophy bass 8 pounds or larger. Three recent entries are listed for Lake Trafford. https://www.trophycatchflorida.com/

Tuesday night come and participate in the pictures, maps, and details of how we will have the outing.

We will have some Pizza and adult beverages so we can talk, plan, and recall stories about fishing.

Everyone is welcome. This is our social fishing club.

See you there.

Mackerel fishing 12/17 and Holiday Party 12/18

The board decided last evening at the meeting on the following:

mackerel

Have a mackerel fishing trip on Saturday, December 17.  The trip location will be determined based on the wind conditions.  Location candidates are Sprigger Bank, Biscayne Bay, or Whitewater Bay.  Why fish alone? Link up with someone who wants to go.

Then on Sunday, December 18, the club will have its annual Holiday Party starting at 6:30 pm.  Main dishes are covered, but please bring either a side or desert.

Henry and David G. are coordinating the events.  Please communicate with them so they can plan on accommodating both events.  If they don’t hear from you , then they will ASSUME that you will not be present.

Please let them know
1) if you are going Mackerel fishing
2) If you are coming to the party, and what you can bring.

Coral Reef presentation

Special coral reef presentation on Tuesday evening, October 25, at 7:30 pm.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Paul Jones present about his research projects. He is a post-doc at the University of Miami/NOAA who researches coral reefs and climate change with a particular focus on coral-algal symbiosis and bleaching in response to thermal stress.

His current projects include the impacts of the recent mass bleaching events on coral health in the Florida Keys and land-based sources of pollution influences on biodiversity on reefs in Miami-Dade and Broward.

We are going to have burgers, beans, and chips to celebrate, $5.00. The celebration is having such a distinguished guest speaker.

Set your plans accordingly to attend Tuesday evening.

Don’t miss this one….I assure you will be fascinated by what is taking place today.

We may also learn some small way we can help.

See you there.
